Following multiple days of downpour in Indonesia, on 2 March 2025, flooding in Bogor, Indonesia, the Katulampa Dam has caused the water level to almost reaching alert level 1, with the impact of a large quantity of waste being carried by the current down Ciliwung River. In turn, the Water Body Unit (UPS Badan Air) response team has been working tirelessly around the clock to clear the excessive amount of refuse that has collected.
Waste removal efforts have been ongoing to prevent further buildup that could cause congestion and aggravated flooding. Amongst the heavy machinery used by the Orange DLH Team to clear the immense amount of accumulated waste, the POWERPLUS PP600E-XI Excavator outfitted with the Material Handler attachment was utilized to flawlessly lift and move large amounts of debris quickly and efficiently, making short work of the pileup.
Speed and efficiency in clearing the congestion was key to minimizing the damages of the flooding. The POWERPLUS Excavator was run around the clock during the period of operation to continuously remove and clear out the accumulated trash.
At Simatupang’s Ciliwung Waste Filter, 1,500 tons of waste material were piled up at the Manggarai Sluice Gate, being removed ultimately with the help of a POWERPLUS Excavator, demonstrating its speed and reliability in getting the job done.
On the early morning of 4 March 2025, Ciliwung River was faced with another wave of downpour from the previous night, alongside the subsequent wave of waste material from upstream. The Water Body Unit has been continuing their efforts to manage the debris flowing downstream in the Ciliwung River. The high water discharge severely hindered the Water Body Unit personnel from manually handling the buildup and forced them to rely on heavy machinery such as excavators.
With the urgency of clearing out blockages to avoid exacerbated effects from delayed action, especially during the monsoon periods, reliable, durable and efficient machinery is paramount to ensure that operations are undisrupted and on track to completion.
This was not the first occasion that POWERPLUS machinery has been successfully utilized for critical situations and disaster relief. In 2023, the POWERPLUS PP6000E-XI was also seen in action clearing the accumulated waste material at the TB Simatupang segment.
The Ciliwung River border waste filter’s TB Simatupang Segment is one of the real efforts made by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in preventing blockages caused by waste, especially waste from water bodies originating from upstream to the Jakarta estuary which can often lead to flooding in Jakarta. Besides being filtered, the waste undergoes several stages of processing such as sorting and shredding, which will later be reused as compost fertilizer, organic mulch, and RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel) a form of alternative fuel.
As of December 2023, approximately 1,300 tons of waste from water bodies and organic waste from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Parks and Forestry Service has been processed at this location. With the operation of this waste filter, the percentage of waste handling at the source will increase which is expected to extend the service life of the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Treatment Facility (TPST).
